Roman Abramovich to back Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel in the summer after a relatively quiet January transfer window
According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel could receive more financial backing from Roman Abramovich in the coming summer transfer window. The Blues did not push for any signing in January despite injury issues and covid scares in the last few months.
The Blues started this Premier League season in fine fashion but could not maintain their position at the top for a substantially long period of time. The Stamford Bridge outfit has already lost two key players with wing-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell out due to injury. Whilst the former has been showing great signs of recovery, the latter has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
One would have thought that the club would dip into the market in January to fill the void left by the injury issues but the Blues decided to stay put and see the season through. The club recalled Kenedy from his loan spell at Flamengo but given his lack of experience with our senior team, it remains to be seen what role he plays until the summer.
Chelsea and where they can add suitable depth in their squad
The club splashed the big bucks last summer to bring in Romelu Lukaku to Stamford Bridge for a staggering fee of £97.5m. The Belgian international is struggling to live up to that price tag at the moment despite scoring crucial goals in the FIFA Club World Cup. The fans would be hoping that this could help propel him in the right direction but the attacking department looks a bit flat at the moment.
Even Timo Werner has struggled to replicate the form that he had once shown with RB Leipzig while the club already saw the backs of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud last summer. That being said, a solution much closer to home could present itself as a great opportunity at the moment. The West Londoners will see 20-year-old loanee Armando Broja return from his spell at Southampton this summer.
The youngster has shown immense potential and has cemented his place in the first team set-up with the Saints. He is having a great season with the Saints but one could argue whether it would be too soon to introduce Broja into the first team set up at the tender age of 20. Chelsea were also linked with Alexander Isak but any deal for the Swedish professional footballer could prove to be a costly affair.
Whilst Tuchel has created a great defensive foundation at the club, three of their main players in Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Andreas Christensen will be out of contract in the summer. There has been a lot of speculation regarding their future and the club would require apt replacements should any of them depart at the end of their respective contracts.
The Blues have won a plethora of titles including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and now the Club World Cup. Tuchel would now be looking to get his hands on the PL title and that could require some financial backing in the coming window if they are to stand a chance to compete against current Premier League holders Manchester City.

It remains to be seen where Tuchel may strengthen this team but from a fans’ perspective at this point in time, a lethal centre-forward and a quality centre-back look like two tasty prospects the club would be wise to pursue.
