Speaking in an interview, as quoted by the Evening Standard, Chelsea star N’Golo Kante said that both he and the club are hungry for more trophies, and vowed to add more titles to their trophy cabinet in the coming weeks.
The Frenchman was speaking after the Blues won the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time in their history, beating South American champions Palmeiras 2-1 in the final. The game went into extra time after it finished 1-1 at the end of ninety minutes until a Kai Havertz penalty settled the match towards the end.
Kante said that the players took the responsibility of winning the final very seriously, considering that the club had never won the trophy before. Chelsea ended up losing the Club World Cup final almost a decade ago to Corinthians.
“We took it very seriously. For many of the players, we’ve never played this tournament, the club had never won it and to have the privilege to play it and win it is very special. It’s a very nice feeling. This is special. It’s a nice moment, we’re all together and it’s another trophy.”
With this trophy, Kante has now added the Champions League, Super Cup, and the Club World Cup to his trophy-laden career with Chelsea. The latest triumph is sure to establish himself as a Blues legend in the future.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has come in and turned the Stamford Bridge side into a group of winners in under a year, turning the club’s fortunes around after his predecessor Frank Lampard’s time with the side saw them fail to achieve their potential.
Kante has recognised this winning mentality that Tuchel has brought, saying that Chelsea will try to win every title available to them in the future and compete for everything. The Blues are also due to play Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final at the end of February.
“We know there are many more important games coming with the final of the Carabao Cup, we’re still in the Champions League, we have to do well in the Premier League and the FA Cup is coming. I don’t know what we can achieve, but what we want is to get the best out of our team so we compete for everything. We will go for every trophy.”
Having won some silverware early in the season, we can hope that Kante and Co. use this triumph as a platform to go out and win more trophies towards the end of the campaign. Like the France international mentioned, the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League are very much for Chelsea’s taking this year.
The Premier League title may be some distance away, with Chelsea dropping a few points at the beginning of the year, but a full effort to climb up the table can be expected from Tuchel’s men in the coming months. The Blues last won the PL title in the 2016/17 season.
February could bring yet another trophy in the form of the Carabao Cup, but a strong opponent in Liverpool stand in the way of cup glory. Tuchel, however, will back his side to win the competition and hope that the Club World Cup triumph gives them the confidence to do so.
It’s a good time to be a Chelsea fan at the moment, and 2022 may bring greater joy if the club can manage to win all the other knockout competitions that they are part of. Next season, we would expect the squad to come back stronger and challenge for the Premier League as serious contenders.
