Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea face major setback in pursuit of Barcelona sensation Gavi

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Barcelona are thought to be in the final stages of new contract discussions with Gavi who has been linked to Chelsea in the past.

The 17-year-old La Masia product has grown in stature this season, showcasing his abilities on numerous occasions. The teenage midfielder has already played for the Spanish international team and could be viewed as a potential world-beater should he continue on this trajectory.

Gavi has already played 28 matches across all competitions, bagging two goals and recording three assists for the Blauranga to date. The teenage sensation would have attracted a lot of attention from top clubs across Europe considering his recent form for both club and country.

What does this mean for Gavi and Chelsea?

The Spanish midfielder rose through the ranks at Barcelona and is thought to have a positive relationship with the club. It thus seems like a monumental task to lure a player who is already doing well and going places with his boyhood club.

With the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley failing to create a sustainable impact at Chelsea, the club could be looking to recruit an exciting central midfielder to bolster their ranks. Whilst Mateo Kovacic has proven to be a dependable option in a similar position the club would be looking to add a suitable replacement in their ranks should the Croatian be unavailable due to injury or any other circumstances.

The 17-year-old has proven himself on the big stage but is still in the relatively nascent stages of his football career. It is difficult to see him go straight into the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge and would probably have become a part of the development side or been given a few minutes here and there to help him progress in the team.

With Jorginho and N’Golo Kante in their 30s, the club could do well to sign a young player in the middle of the park to help future-proof the midfield. That being said, the prospects of signing Gavi seem really bleak but the Blues are still being linked with the likes of Declan Rice and Aurélien Tchouaméni who could be viewed as better and more attainable alternatives at the moment.
