25-year-old Chelsea star set to miss Carabao Cup final against Liverpool

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen set to miss Carabao Cup final against Liverpool

According to @NizaarKinsella via Adam Newson (h/t Football.London), Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen hasn’t travelled with the squad for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

The Danish international is one of our best defenders and his absence limits Thomas Tuchel’s options in the heart of his defence. Last season, Christensen gave an outstanding performance in the Champions League final after the injury to Thiago Silva. The academy graduate had the opportunity to pick up another title with his boyhood club, but the circumstances have denied him the opportunity to play a decisive role.

It is believed that Christensen wouldn’t be able to appear in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool due to an Achilles injury. Even though the extent of the fitness problem is pretty minor, Thomas Tuchel doesn’t appear to have risked the defender’s wellbeing.

The 25-year-old wasn’t among the players who arrived at the team hotel ahead of the clash against Liverpool later today. It’s a big blow for our team as our German manager doesn’t have many quality options to fill the void left by Christensen.

Chelsea had one of the best defensive lines at the start of the season. However, the recurring injuries created a massive problem for Tuchel and have adversely impacted our ability to challenge for the Premier League title.

The German manager was pushed to deploy César Azpilicueta in the right-back role to cover Reece James’s injury absence, which leaves only three senior centre backs – Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Thiago Silva, available for selection.

Now thanks to the injury to Christensen, the manager might need to pick up another defender for today’s game. Considering the past matches, Malang Sarr seems to be the ideal choice of the former PSG manager.

The French defender has been quite under-average in this campaign. He already fell from the pecking order, but the manager was pushed to use him amid the big injury crisis. In any case, Sarr’s abilities are still questionable. It remains to be seen whether he steps up for the big occasion or not.
