Speaking to the Evening Standard, Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi refused to deny the possibility of switching his international allegiance, amidst rumours of a move to the Ghana national team from England.
Hudson-Odoi is currently enjoying success at the club level, helping his side to a first-ever FIFA Club World Cup trophy, beating South American champions Palmeiras in the final. It took a Kai Havertz penalty in the dying minutes of extra time to hand the Blues a 2-1 win at the end.
When quizzed about his alleged plans to switch his international allegiance, the Englishman refused to comment and said that it was a matter of discussion for the future.
“I don’t know. At the end of the day, we will wait until that times comes.”
The youngster has so far won three caps for England, with his last appearance for the national side coming quite some time ago in November 2019, during the European Championship qualifiers.
Hudson-Odoi has struggled to take his talents to the senior level and has often been left out of the Three Lions squad. The Blues star has still not played in a major tournament for England, so it is understandable why the player is considering whether to keep his allegiance to England.
For the time being though, the winger said that he was focused on Chelsea and wanted to help the club win all the trophies they are competing for. The Blues youngster will be hoping to add another trophy to his cabinet in the form of the Carabao Cup later this month.
“At the same time, I’ve just got to focus on the club until we get that far.”
Hudson-Odoi is still eligible to play for Ghana because he holds dual nationality and all three of his England caps were won before the age of 21. Under FIFA rules, the winger can still turn out for the Black Stars in the event he does not make any more appearances for England.
Further, he can apply to represent Ghana later this year as it will be three years since his last England appearance. The player also recently turned down an opportunity to play for the Three Lions, which only indicates a move away from the national team setup.
Chelsea fans know Hudson-Odoi to be a versatile footballer who has impressed in various roles under manager Thomas Tuchel‘s tutelage. The German has made the most of the winger’s versatility, also deploying him as a full-back when needed this season.
Ghana will be following this news closely, relishing the opportunity of having a potential world-class star at their disposal, using him in major tournaments as they look to mount a battle against the world’s best national teams.
