According to RTL (h/t Football.London), Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joan Watzke has suggested that the future of Erling Haaland will be made clear soon amidst Chelsea interest.
Performance-wise Erling Haaland has been one of the most lethal strikers in Europe, scoring 23 goals in 20 matches across all competitions this season. Age-wise, he is still only 21 and is already among the most prolific frontmen on the continent. The Norwegian is bound to get better with time and represents a long term investment.
According to The Athletic, Manchester City wants to sign Haaland to replace Sergio Aguero, who left the club last summer. Even though Manchester United were also in the race, ESPN suggests that the Red Devils have since backed off, fearing that the Dortmund player has already made up his mind to join Real Madrid.
Chelsea also has been interested in the 21-year-old striker. The Blues’ current crop of strikers hasn’t been at their best this campaign. Due to the lack of productivity from the front line, Chelsea have struggled to finish off teams or break down determined defences.
Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joan Watzke suggested that they will resolve Erling Haaland’s transfer situation in a few weeks. He added that the German giants will sign a replacement if the Norwegian striker chooses to move on.
“I don’t know [if Dortmund can keep Haaland]. That will certainly clear up in the next few weeks, maybe a month, maybe six weeks. If he leaves, we’ll handle it the way we’ve always done it. We’ll find someone new again.”
Chelsea already have some high profile strikers amongst their ranks namely Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku. The club spent fortunes bringing in these players, but they have so far failed to repay the faith put in them.
The Blues have had to compensate for this lack of goals from other areas of the pitch. While it is heartening to see the squad as a whole step up, it isn’t sustainable to make it a long term tactic. Chelsea lacks an infallible scorer and Haaland has all the minerals to be just that.
Considering the competition involved, Haaland wouldn’t come cheap. Chelsea also needs to strengthen other areas of the pitch and this could potentially hamper their ability to go big for Haaland. Even if Borussia Dortmund concludes that the Norwegian striker would leave in the summer, our board should take the decision that would be advantageous for our long term growth.
