Two arrests made after objects were thrown at Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger during Tottenham clash

According to the Evening Standard, two men have been taken into custody after items were thrown onto the pitch in the direction of Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in the clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old was one of many standout stars in the Blues victory against Spurs, but the victory was marred by reports of crowd trouble, with objects, including a lighter, thrown in the German defender’s direction from the away end.

A spokesman for the Football Association said that they were investigating the incident, liaising with the club and the police on a priority basis. Chelsea also had a spokesperson address the events at Stamford Bridge, claiming that the guilty parties will be taken to task.

“The throwing of objects at matches is completely unacceptable. We will be working with Tottenham Hotspur and the police to identify any offenders and we will collectively take the strongest possible action against them.”

Blues defender Antonio Rudiger appeared to have missiles thrown at him from the crowd at Stamford Bridge.

The Football Association have launched an urgent investigation into the matter, while the Metropolitan Police confirmed that two men were taken into custody. The police said they are also trying to identify anyone else who was throwing objects onto the pitch, aimed at Rudiger.

It certainly is great news that the authorities have taken such quick action against those guilty of such horrific events. Rudiger certainly did not need to suffer for no fault of his own, as objects rained down in his direction while playing at home, albeit from rival fans.

The incident mirrored scenes that transpired at Goodison Park before Chelsea’s clash against Spurs, where a teenager was charged with assault and throwing an item onto the pitch during Everton’s game with Aston Villa. This clearly seems to be the trend amongst English opposition fans and puts players’ safety on the pitch in grave concern.

The reports of objects being aimed at Rudiger at Stamford Bridge now makes this the second instance in as many days of players suffering due to objects being thrown at them. Rival fans seem to be overstepping their line, making their hate for the opposition toxic and dangerous.

This is certainly worrying for officials and players, as certain fans seem to be polluting the game-day atmosphere with their dirty antics and affecting the general concern and safety for those on the pitch. It was reassuring to see the FA and police acting so quickly and punishing those guilty. We can hope that it will act as a deterrent in the future.

Rival fans seem to have recently resorted to acts of hooliganism, tarnishing not just their reputation, but also their clubs’ stature. They seem to take pleasure in crossing the line, with disgusting attempts to hurt professionals who make a living playing the game that these fans claim to love.

As such, there must be a safety guideline set in place such that rival fans are not allowed to bring in dangerous objects that they can aim at players. Fans need to be made aware of the ill effects of their dangerous actions in an attempt to curb the mess.
