According to the French publication L’Equipe [Print Edition] via Sport Witness, as quoted by Absolute Chelsea (h/t Football.London), Chelsea transfer target Kingsley Coman is expected to sign a contract extension with Bayern Munich soon. He has not earned many minutes this season, having suffered injury issues at regular intervals.
The Blues had “made an offer” to land the Frenchman but have been dealt a major blow by this update. His current contract will come to an end in June 2023, which has seen him get linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. However, that looks to be off the cards and he will now sign a new deal with Bayern.
Manchester City were also keeping tabs on Coman as they tried to facilitate a transfer to boost their squad but, their plans were foiled by this update. It remains to be seen whether Thomas Tuchel’s side would turn their attention towards someone else in the coming days.
The prospect of signing the 25-year-old would have been great considering how some of our attacking signings has not hit the heights they had shown at their previous clubs. While they have started to click again recently, it would have been good if we had multiple options for us to choose from if they failed to sustain this form.
Then again, there are downsides like the regular injury issues the France international keeps getting plagued by for quite some time. Despite that, he has scored five goals and two assists in just 905 minutes across all competitions this term. But all is not lost as his signing would not have been a priority for us anyway.
If anything, the defensive areas should be the ones we should be focusing on, considering the injury concerns as well as the contract situation of some of the players. Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen are in the final six months of their respective deals and could leave next summer if they take that decision.
Ben Chilwell and Reece James are currently out injured, and there is a lack of options to compensate for their absence. Azpilicueta is not a natural wing-back but still can do a fine job in that role, whereas Marcos Alonso is the only backup for Chilwell. It showcases how there is a need for reinforcement regardless of their availability.
In the latest update, Eurosport revealed that the Bundesliga attacker has completed the signing and has extended his contract until 2027.
