Transfer News: Misfiring 25-year-old Chelsea ace offered to Barcelona

Chelsea forward Timo Werner amongst players offered to FC Barcelona

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sun), Spanish heavyweights FC Barcelona have reportedly been offered a host of players in the transfer market to sign either this month or in the summer, one of whom being Chelsea forward Timo Werner.

With Xavi Hernandez taking over the reins of the club from Ronald Koeman, the new boss is said to be desperate for reinforcements in the squad. Koeman’s time at Barcelona saw the Spanish giants consistently underperform in the league, which has now left them trailing La Liga pacesetters Real Madrid by a whopping 17 points.

Having already added Manchester City’s Ferran Torres to his squad, Xavi has been offered an ‘endless’ list of players to sign. Some of the names on it include Werner, Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Manchester United ace Edinson Cavani.

Chelsea forward Timo Werner is amongst the endless list of players offered to FC Barcelona.

Barcelona is going through a financial crisis and the players that have reportedly been offered to the club are mostly those who will be out of contract at the end of the campaign or others who have seen their stock fall. A striker appears to be on the agenda following Sergio Aguero’s retirement earlier this season.

Amongst the list of strikers that have been made available to the Barca boss is Chelsea’s Werner. The German joined Chelsea in 2020 but has failed to establish himself as the first-choice forward at Stamford Bridge. Barcelona however, will need to splash the cash to sign the German, as the player still has a few years left on his contract with the Blues.

Potential free-agents from the Premier League, such as Alexandre Lacazette and Divock Origi, have also been linked to the Nou Camp, as has former PL striker Diego Costa. Xavi is well aware of Barcelona’s financial constraints and would like to hold off on making a move for a striker until the summer when he can dip into the Bosman market.

Chelsea’s Timo Werner has been offered to Barcelona after failing to establish himself as the first-choice in the Blues’ attack.

It is certainly surprising to see Werner’s name in this list of potential players made available for Barca, especially given that the club is in serious financial trouble. In a list of soon to be out-of-contract strikers, Werner’s name sticks out like a sore thumb.

Rumours like these are best ignored, given how absurd it is to link Werner with a move away from Chelsea so soon into his career. Although not first-choice under Thomas Tuchel, there is no doubt that Werner has been given ample playing time under the German boss. The forward also had to deal with injuries and Covid this campaign, cutting down on even more opportunities that he could have had to establish himself in the team.

Having returned to fitness recently, Werner seems to have developed an attacking link with fellow striker Romelu Lukaku. It will be in Chelsea’s best interests if both players can form a dynamic duo.

With Werner recently saying he is determined to bounce back strong and repay the Chelsea fans for their continued support, it is likely that the German will stay with us beyond the summer. A prolific scorer during his time with RB Leipzig, Chelsea will hope he can channel those powers once again.
