According to Canadian outlet TSN (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have approached Ligue 1 outfit LOSC Lille Metropole for more information regarding the future of Jonathan David.
Jonathan David has been one of the standout performers in France in this campaign. With 16 goals in 29 matches, he is also the joint-top scorer of a league that houses Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. His potential is certainly there for all to see.
A potent striker in front of goal, he is not too shabby with the ball at his feet outside the box as well. And at 22, he is still a long way away from his peak professional years.
The Canadian international may now take his career to another level. It is clear that his goal return this season would have caught the attention of many football fans in Europe and if he continues to develop on this trajectory, it isn’t wrong to suggest that he would then have caught the eye of some of the major clubs in the continent.
Chelsea have apparently taken a massive interest in the 22-year-old striker. The Blues went one step further recently and enquired Lille about the future of their key striker.
David isn’t an overnight star; he has consistently put in the work for the past few seasons. With 18 goals in 24 appearances in international competitions, the Canadian star is also a known entity in his country. It is clear that the youngster knows where the goal is.
It remains to be seen what ambitions the youngster has. Lille aren’t as well placed as Chelsea to win European competitions, and even though the French outfit won the Ligue 1 not long back, PSG’s current standing in France makes it difficult for anyone to jostle with them for the league title. Lille trail the league leaders by 18 points already.
Therefore, keeping tabs on him could prove advantageous for us considering the poor form of our own strikers. Romelu Lukaku cannot keep playing at the top level forever while Timo Werner’s goal-scoring return isn’t really turning heads in England.
We did lose Tammy Abraham and Oliver Giroud in the summer and Tuchel has also shown at times that he is open to the idea of playing both Werner and Lukaku together. In such a situation, it isn’t audacious to suggest that David can become a part of the first team straightaway. But for that, we would have to formalize any interest we may have in the player.
