Transfer News: Chelse are tracking Ajax defensive-midfielder Edson Alvarez
According to Football Insider (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are preparing a contract offer for 24-year-old Ajax star Edson Alvarez.
Edson Alvarez has been a steady performer for the Dutch side in this campaign. The Mexican star earned the manager’s trust in the second phase of last season and has been getting regular game time since then. Indeed, the midfielder has capitalized on the chances thrown his way
He has already featured in 22 matches across all competitions and bagged two goals and one assist. A smart player when called into the defensive side of the game, he is no pushover when in possession as well.
Alvarez’s incredible qualities haven’t escaped the eyes of the big Premier League clubs. Chelsea are believed to be interested in signing the 24-year-old and are currently preparing an offer to convince Ajax Amsterdam. But Leicester City and Crystal Palace are also in the race and keeping a close eye on the situation.
Chelsea eye Alvarez
Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté and Jorginho have been two of the best performing midfielders in the Premier League recently. However, after both of them suffered injuries, Thomas Tuchel found himself in hot waters due to lack of quality backup options. They both returned to the starting lineup recently but are yet to get back to their best.
It would be wise to get in a quality midfielder who can play for us in the long run. Alvarez came to Amsterdam in 2019 and has shown rapid growth. The midfielder is good on the ball and possesses positional awareness when off it. If signed, he could be a contender to start games but more importantly, would offer quality backup to our current midfield trio of Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Jorginho.
Saúl Ñíguez was brought in on loan last summer but has clearly failed to impress recently. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him return to Atletico Madrid at the end of this season, and it would be wise from our side to look for a midfielder in the near future.

If we somehow manage to convince the Dutch giants to sell the player to us, he would become the first Mexican player to play for Chelsea in the Premier League. He would, however, not be the first player to leave Ajax for us.
Mario Melchiot, Jesper Gronkjaer, Moubarak Boussoufa, and Hakim Ziyech are just some of the players that have left Amsterdam for West London in the past.
