Transfer News: Antonio Rudiger takes transfer u-turn and wants to commit long-term future at Chelsea
According to German outlet Sport Bild (h/t ESPN), Antonio Rudiger is eyeing a long-term stay at Chelsea and is optimistic about finding a solution regarding his contract.
Antonio Rudiger has played a massive role in some of the most important games this campaign. In addition to being a top-notch defensive performer, the 28-year-old also netted vital goals like the one he scored yesterday against Tottenham in the EFL Cup semi-final.
Furthermore, the German star is the only central defender from the Blues backline who hasn’t missed any game due to injury this season. He has certainly become one of the top defenders in the league and is a very valuable asset for the current UEFA Champions League holders.
However, Rudiger’s off-field contract standoff was beginning to harm his relationship with the Chelsea board. After rejecting a lucrative offer from the Blues, it was clear that the player was considering a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer.
What next for Rudiger?
However, it is now believed that Chelsea’s relationship with Rudiger’s representatives has improved in recent times, and the talks are going in a positive direction. The former Roma defender has enjoyed a good relationship with Thomas Tuchel and intends to extend the fruitful partnership.
Chelsea still haven’t managed to close a renewal deal with three of their major central defenders. In the last month, the defensive depth has already been tested with many injuries, with Tuchel continuously struggling to put out his strongest backline.
The German manager’s decision to play central defender Malang Sarr at left wing-back could be a way to protect Marcos Alonso from injuries. With Thiago Silva still sidelined, the Blues could seriously be out of defensive options with one more injury or suspension.
Even though reinforcement in central defence would help manage short-term problems, it would most likely turn into luxury when all players become fit to play. Therefore, rather than splashing the cash on a new player, Chelsea would be wise to secure the contracts of their current stars.

Chelsea are currently contending for major titles, and players like Rudiger make the difference in important games. Therefore, the German defender’s potential renewal would be a massive boost for the squad, and it may also influence the players who haven’t penned down new deals.
Seeing a player at the top of his game commit his future to the club sends out a strong message. Moreover, it also gives us a chance to sell him for a fee in the future rather than losing him on a free this summer. There is barely anything to lose for the Blues by tying down Rudiger, and it is surprising as it is that it has taken us this long to reach this stage.
