European champions Chelsea defeated English minnows, Chesterfield with consummate ease to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The disparity between the sides was clear and the Bleus dominated from start to finish. Having gone into the break with a 4-0 lead, Chelsea did take their foot off the gas in the second half. The approach appeared to be one of seeing the game through than racking up more goals.
Thomas Tuchel admits that the players did a fine job of settling the tie early on. Sure enough with bigger fish to fry in the coming days, the German manager was able to make substitutions and hand a few of his players a well-deserved rest and some others a much-required runout.
Tuchel admitted as much that he was glad the players started the game well and wrapped up the result quickly. He was particularly pleased with the attitude and the approach shown to the game
“I’m happy with the attitude and how we started. We decided the match very early and this is what we wanted.”
A perfectionist, the German manager did point out that the players could have scored more had they been more clinical in front of goal. According to The Mirror, the Chelsea boss pointed out that more could have been done with regards to attacking output in the final 20 minutes of the game.
“In the last 20 minutes I could have asked for more chances and clinical finishes but, okay, the job is done.”
While a 5-1 win is a good result, Tuchel appears keen to ensure that his players remain hungry for the entirety of the game. The attention to detail could be what makes the difference in games where we will be up against bigger challenges.
The German boss is not wrong in suggesting that the players need to keep up their performance until the full-time whistle. Chesterfield are comfortably miles away from reaching out level but the fact that they still scored at Stamford Bridge is something to ponder over.
It was a night to remember for Lewis Hall who made history. At 17 years and 122 days, the Cobham starlet became the youngest player to ever feature for Chelsea in the FA Cup as a starter.
Tuchel was much more effusive in his praise for the youngster and noted the impact he had in the game. Hopefully, there is more to come both from Lewis and Chelsea in the competition this season. Having fallen short at the final hurdle last time, the onus will be on us to go one better this season.
