Speaking in his post-match press conference, as quoted by football.london, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel claimed that coming back from 2-0 down against Liverpool was immense.
The Blues had to share the spoils on the night against a relentless Liverpool side. The first half an hour would have perhaps made it seem like we are just not on their level, but the fightback was crucial. Even more so because it was done in the same half.
Mateo Kovacic, who had a great game overall, already bagged a goal of 2022 contender in the bag with a sumptuous volley. To add to that, Christian Pulisic avenged his early game blunder by scoring the equalizer. Few teams can pull this off against the Reds, especially when Virgil van Dijk is one of their centre-backs.
Thomas Tuchel realized that his side had done incredibly well to come back from a tough position. He explained after the game that coming back from 2-0 down was immense.
“Coming back from 2-0 was immense. There are no worries except for the result. It was a great performance from both teams.”
Had Chelsea not made a come-back, it would have been clear that we are quite a way off from Liverpool and league leaders, Man City. But the two quick goals in succession speaks volumes of the kind of talent we possess. Mind you, this was a side functioning without their club-record signing and not because of injury or Covid-19.
Liverpool might have had three midfielders, but N’Golo Kante and Kovacic ran the game. Their ball progression and ability to get away from people proved crucial over the ninety minutes. But a victory would have had the crowd erupt into joy and given Tuchel something to fight for when we travel to the Etihad to face the run-away champions in two weeks.
We still have a lot to play for, and even the best have squandered title races from here. Liverpool looked in the ascendency last season, but the Citizens turned a new leaf at the turn of the year. Thus, anything can happen, courtesy of which, this result at Stamford Bridge could prove to be crucial.
One would also hope Romelu Lukaku to be back, but only if he is apologetic about his blunder. If the Belgian is firing and we can land some good cover in the left-back role for the injury-riddled Ben Chilwell, it might not be a surprise if the Blues get close to Man City. Regardless, this was an entertaining game, and the credit goes to the boys for fighting back against arguably the 2nd best team in the land.
