According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Thiago Silva has signed a new contract with Chelsea extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2023. He has been a commanding presence in the backline, and his extension would put an end to the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Silva is happy with life with the Blues and had never thought about leaving the club at the end of this season. He had expressed his desire to extend his current deal back in September to the board, which further validates it. His stance made it easy for the board, and the renewal talks were completed smoothly in a small period.
Speaking to the club’s media (h/t Chelsea official website), the 37-year-old had conveyed his happiness in signing the extension while mentioning that he still has the drive to put in the effort for this club. He added how he is in a healthy environment and would use that to continue performing at the top level.
“I never thought I would play for three years here in this great club so I’m very happy to stay for another season. I will continue to give everything for this club and for the supporters, who have always been by my side since I arrived. It’s amazing to have this relationship with the fans and not only that but the players, staff and the whole club.”
It would be music to the ears of all the supporters especially considering the centre-back situation at the West London club. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta would become free agents at the end of this campaign if they don’t renew their current deals, which is a concerning subject for us.
The contract extension of the Brazilian means that Marina Granovskaia can now shift her attention on negotiations with the other centre-backs. Plus, he still plays at a top level and has barely shown any signs of decline, making this new deal even sweeter. He was influential in the last match against Liverpool, indicating how good he performs for us.
This new contract would mean that youngsters like Trevoh Chalobah will have more opportunities to learn their trade from one of the best centre-backs of the last decade. Also, if we lose any one of Christensen, Rudiger or Azpilicueta, the Brazil superstar’s presence would help us to deal with their potential departure until we bring in reinforcements.
All in all, this puts an end to one of our multiple contract sagas. Hopefully, other Chelsea stars follow suit and commit their future to the Blues beyond this summer.
