“Played very well”- Several fans react as Chelsea draw 2-2 to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge

Some fans react on Twitter as Chelsea fight back to draw 2-2 against Liverpool

An exhilarating night came to an end at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea settled for a point in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Thomas Tuchel claimed he had not given up the title race, but things looked uncertain for a while after Romelu Lukaku was dropped from the squad. Thus, we were going into arguably our biggest game of the season without our club-record signing.

Regardless, Kai Havertz was handed the role to lead the line and pester Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. Christian Pulisic was finally back in his original left winger role and looked dangerous. Sure enough, 6 minutes in, and a deflected pass from Trent Alexander Arnold put the American through on goal against Caoimhin Kelleher.

But the Irishman stood his ground and took the ball off the 22-year-old as he looked to round him up. However, a couple of minutes later, a misdirect and an unorthodox header from Trevoh Chalobah saw Sadio Mane through on goal against Edouard Mendy, and the Liverpool ace rounded off his national teammate to score emphatically.

Liverpool piled the pressure on and started winning the second balls. They grew into the game, and then Mohamed Salah was in a dangerous area in the penalty box five minutes from the half-hour mark. The Egyptian shimmed away from Marcos Alonso before scoring at the near post. The Blues looked down and out, and Tuchel sat down on his bench in dismay.

Encouraging display?

The fans were stunned, given the magnitude of the fixture. However, the players still believed, and it paid off eventually. Chelsea won a free-kick near the corner post five minutes from half-time, and Alonso whipped it in at the near post. Kelleher pulled off a good save, but it fell at the feet of Mateo Kovacic, who volleyed home magnificently, and there was hope again.

It looked like we would be going in 2-1 at half-time, but there was bounce about the men in blue, and the adrenaline levels were pumping high. Sure enough, a couple of minutes after the first goal, Alonso found himself on the end of a counter-attack, and he played the ball over the top for Pulisic. The American controlled the ball with his chest before thumping in the equalizer with his left foot. He ran towards the Chelsea fans as Tuchel rejoiced off the bench.

The second half began in an end-to-end fashion, but neither side could create clear cut chances. Mendy was called into action by a long-ranger from Salah, but the Senegalese was never going to get beaten from there. Jorginho and Callum Hudson-Odoi did come on, but neither could really affect the game. It ended all square, making it the perfect result for Man City.

The title race could just about be over unless the Citizens have a disastrous second half of the season. It has happened to others before and Chelsea would be hoping it happens again. Let us now see how some fans reacted on Twitter to a breathtaking night of football at the Bridge.
