According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Romelu Lukaku is likely to return to the Chelsea squad after having a successful meeting with Thomas Tuchel on the subject of the controversial interview. He has conveyed his regret about the mistake and looks set to be on the way to getting reintegrated into the team.
Lukaku was omitted from the matchday squad that faced Liverpool in the 2-2 draw in the Premier League following his comments with Sky Italia. Tuchel is assessing his options following a productive meeting with the striker on the controversy that he created.
The Belgian was involved in a training session on Monday, which took place before the meeting with the German boss. The club has advised him to issue a public apology as the fans have not taken a liking to what has unravelled. Roman Abramovich has backed the Blues coach over his decision, and Marina Granovskaia was also involved in the discussion.
Both sides are not even considering the possibility of a transfer as the club believes the situation is solvable. They have refused to comment on any potential punishment or the meeting that took place with the Belgian superstar. He was shocked by the reaction to his interview as he never intended to force his way out of Stamford Bridge.
The supporters are very displeased about what has happened, but the situation is not irreversible. Apologising is the best way to start fixing the issue, plus the Blues ace should follow it up by conveying his feelings surrounding that interview.
The Belgian centre-forward was so fixated on fixing his complicated relationship with the Inter Milan fans that he failed to foresee the implications that the interview would bring to his current club. It would take time but he would win back the supporters if he continues to perform at the top level and bring success to the club.
We are facing an injury crisis alongside a slump recently, and this was the last thing that we needed. We must solve this situation as soon as possible and focus on improving for the rest of the season. Uncertainty and lack of harmony would harm the team in the long term, so we should look towards putting an end to this subject.
Chelsea were impeccable against Liverpool, especially after going 2-0 down. But one’s mind would wander towards thinking what could have been had the 28-year-old superstar striker played in the game. He is a very good striker and certainly strengthens our XI when he’s in it.
It is good to know that the situation could well be resolved soon and we can regain the harmony our dressing room seemingly had during the start of this season.
