According to transfer news on Spanish outlet ABC (h/t Mirror), Real Madrid are not interested in signing Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, as they feel ‘used’ by him for a ‘last big contract’.
It is no secret that the German superstar is in the final six months of his Chelsea contract. There has been speculation regarding his future, which is natural considering he is yet to sign a new deal despite the January transfer window opening yesterday.
It means he is free to open talks regarding a pre-contract with foreign clubs over a summer move. Real Madrid have been a strong competitor in the race to sign Rudiger- or so it seemed.
It is now claimed that Los Blancos don’t have any interest in signing the Blues defender and that they feel he is using their name to get himself a big contract at Stamford Bridge. PSG and Bayern Munich, however, are two teams that are still linked with the wantaway German international.
Apparently, if Madrid bring in another defender, he would be a younger player as compared to Rudiger, who would then act as cover for David Alaba and Eder Militao. This would have come as a boost for Chelsea fans, but as days pass, Rudiger’s exit seems more and more certain as the defender believes it is time for him to leave the PL.
Madrid apparently being out of the race doesn’t put us out of the woods at all. Bayern and PSG are two of the strongest teams in the world and could end up signing the defender anyway.
Moreover, we would also have to offer a contract to Rudiger that he can agree upon, something which seems hard to do with the former AS Roma man’s £10m-a-year wage demands, which is double of what he earns right now.
We have a number of star defenders amidst our ranks. Trevoh Chalobah has been the cushion that has softened the blow of losing Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi in the summer- two players that have really done well at their new clubs.
Andreas Christensen is a bridge between the youngsters and the veterans of the squad, while Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta are the experienced heads at the back. But the problem multiplies itself if these three defenders leave this summer as well.
The Dane, the Spaniard, and the Brazilian are all out of contract in the summer. It is imperative for the Blues to tie down at least some of their best defenders beyond next summer. It would be bad enough to potentially lose out on a highly-rated defender like Rudiger on a free transfer. Seeing other players leave in a similar manner would be added misery.
