According to transfer news on SunSport, PSG are interested in signing Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher over a potential January or summer move.
The youngster is currently on his fourth loan move away from Stamford Bridge and is starting to hit his stride and strut his stuff. He was arguably one of the best players at West Bromwich Albion in the Championship last season, but not many could have predicted a similar outcome for him at a top-flight club that had a mass exodus in the summer and appointed a new manager.
Gallagher has scored six goals and provided three assists in 17 league appearances this season. Thomas Tuchel is a big fan of the midfielder, while the player himself has admitted that he is planning on challenging for a spot in the Blues’ midfield line once he returns to Stamford Bridge.
However, PSG are now keen on ruining those plans. Ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is an admirer of the Chelsea loanee and wants to bring him to the French capital. A January deal is thought to be unlikely due to the terms of his loan deal but a permanent transfer could still take place in the winter window. But the French giants shall also eye a summer move if they cannot orchestrate one this month.
The Blues did offload several young talents this season. Fikayo Tomori made his move to AC Milan permanent, while Marc Guehi and Tino Livramento also secured deals away from their boyhood club. The strike duo of Armando Broja and Tammy Abraham also left the West London club.
However, it is important to remember that Marina Granovskaia put in a buy-back clause for both Livramento and Abraham. We can still bring back Guehi, provided we match the fee offered by a prospective buyer in the future. Broja is also only on loan at Southampton.
Thus, Chelsea are clearly not keen on losing their young starlets. Gallagher is perhaps the pick of the bunch right now and given our current predicament, he could have been brought back in January itself had it not been for certain terms on the season-long loan deal to the South London club. Nevertheless, he is developing well under Patrick Vieira and one season of top-flight action will do a world of good for us and for him.
PSG can try their hand all they want and throw the big pay-cheque like they often do. But Granovskaia would surely be unwise to sell one of our best academy products of the current generation to make a quick profit. The 21-year-old English international is here to stay, at least until the summer, and given his current progress, it will not be a surprise if he plays a vital role in helping us win major titles next season.
But for that, we must make the situation suitable for him to want a future here as well. It wouldn’t be realistic of us to not hand him starts or a deserved contract, and then want him to be with us. Hence, Chelsea should take this apparent interest from PSG as a warning sign and get into action if they want Gallagher at the Bridge for the long term.
