According to the Catalan news outlet El Nacional (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are looking to meet the release clause of Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde in the January transfer window amidst interest from Chelsea. He has been sensational yet again this season, having helped his team to challenge for the La Liga title.
Kounde has a release clause worth €90million in his contract, and the Reds are “willing to pay” it and secure his services from the Rojiblancos this month. They are keen on pursuing him this month and get the better of the other teams in the fray.
Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the situation as they try to bolster their centre of the defence following the departure of Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos. Thomas Tuchel’s side had tried their chances the previous summer, meaning they would not sit idly by after this latest update.
The interest from Jurgen Klopp’s side would be concerning if one blindly takes in the news. We have eyed the Frenchman for a long time, meaning we cannot afford to lose to our direct rivals. That is especially the case considering how three of our centre-backs are in line to become free agents at the end of this season.
However, one could question the integrity of this news, looking at how the Merseyside club have priorities elsewhere. They had just added Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig the previous summer, which further puts into doubt whether this is right or not. That’s not all, as Klopp’s club could use additions in attack when you look at the lack of depth and quality in their frontline.
Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are out on international duty due to the African Cup of Nations, which further calls for incomings in that area. Then there is the question of why the La Liga club are willing to diminish the quality of their squad as they try to challenge for the league title. Nevertheless, we should always be wary moving forward to quickly decide on the matter if there is any attempt to sign the 23-year-old this month.
The France international has made 24 appearances this season while helping the Spanish club to 12 clean sheets in the process. His quality is not questionable, even if he has a height disadvantage compared to his peers in general. But he makes up for it with his athletic build and ability to read the game, which is probably the reason why we have targeted him in the first place.
With the winter transfer window already underway, we may see some more updates in the coming days relating to this subject. Whatever the case it may be, we will get a clear idea for sure in due time but let’s hope that there is a favourable end for us in the future.
