Speaking to Norwegian journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft via Sky Sports, Chelsea target Erling Haaland has broken his silence on his current transfer situation at Borussia Dortmund, hinting that he does not regret making the remarks about the club pressuring him into deciding on his future.
One of the best young strikers in world football, Haaland joined Dortmund from RB Salzburg in 2019. He has since gone from strength to strength and is today one of the best players in his position in world football. With his release clause turning active this summer, he recently broke the silence on his future.
He revealed that Dortmund were putting pressure on him to decide his future. The Germans are keen to see the Norwegian make up his mind regarding what he plans to do in the upcoming summer. Haaland, for his part, is eager to focus on his game.
“Borussia Dortmund have started to put a lot of pressure on me. They want me to decide now. And so… yeah, things will happen now. Even if I only wanted to focus on football and play football.”
The forward still has another two-and-a-half-year left to run on his current deal with Dortmund. Despite this, several European clubs, including Chelsea and Real Madrid, are interested in making a move for him.
The Blues have not had a great time in front of goal this season, with their strikers not particularly contributing to the team’s efforts in finding the back of the net. Romelu Lukaku was brought in from Inter Milan at the beginning of the season but has failed to recreate his form from Italy, looking short of confidence.
When asked about his current stance at the club, Haaland said that he is moving on from his earlier comments, saying he spoke out against Dortmund’s message to him because he felt like he needed to weigh in.
“I think… I don’t really want to say too much about it. But I felt it was time for me to say something, a lot of others were speaking, so that was it. And now I really don’t want to say too much more about it. I think what has been said, has been said and we move on.”
Blues coach Thomas Tuchel will be worried about his strike force not coming together to get his squad out of their recent rut in the Premier League, seeing them drop crucial points in the winter period. Last Sunday’s 2-0 victory over
Tottenham Hotspur was the first league win this year.
With Lukaku and Timo Werner‘s recent troubles in the opposition box and Kai Havertz becoming something of a forgotten man at Chelsea, we seem to need a new outlet for goals. Haaland may be a possible solution, with the Norwegian adding 23 goals to his name in just 20 appearances across all competitions this season.
Apart from the 21-year-old’s goalscoring record, he is also a tall, fast, and physical presence who can run in behind defenders and outperform them at set-pieces. In the Premier League, having a forward with attributes like these means you’ve hit a gold mine, pointing you only in the direction of success.
Although Haaland has now downplayed his earlier comments and moved on, he seems to have hinted at his frustration at the club in an unusual outburst. Whether Chelsea can take advantage of this situation and snatch him from Dortmund’s grasp remains to be seen.
