Chelsea ready to compensate Lyon as they plot Emerson Palmieri recall
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have to agree to a compensation agreement with Lyon in order to bring back Emerson Palmieri to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are in dire need of reinforcements after the injury blow to key players like Ben Chilwell and Reece James.
Even though Thomas Tuchel was managing the situation with the help of César Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso, the recent surgery of Chilwell have put the manager into hot waters. The left-back would likely miss the remainder of the season, whereas his full-back partner, Reece, would miss a handsome number of games in the coming weeks.
It’d be massively tricky for the manager to tackle the coming hectic schedule where Chelsea have to play four games in 11 days, starting with the second leg of the Carabao Cup against Tottenham.
In a recent interview, the German manager emphasised the need for fresh legs and suggested that they are assessing the possibilities to call back Emerson Palmieri from the loan spell.
However, Lyon is reluctant to give away one of their key players, who has given consistent performance throughout the first half of the season.
Chelsea board doesn’t have the power to pressurise the French side as there isn’t any recalling clause attached to Palmieri’s deal.
Even though Lyon wants to sign Palmieri in the summer permanently, their financial problems could prevent them from Chelsea’s demanded price for the Italian full-back.
Marina Granovskaia’s board are looking to take advantage of such a situation by reaching a compensation agreement with Lyon for recalling Palmieri. The French team currently has the option of signing Layvin Kurzawa from Paris St Germain, and if they agree to such a deal, losing Palmieri wouldn’t create much of a problem for Peter Bosz’s team.

Chelsea’s only recognised backup for the left wing-back role is Marcos Alonso, who isn’t getting any younger. Emerson Palmieri could become the long term solution for Ben Chilwell’s backup. With 20 appearances across all competitions for Lyon in this campaign, it’s evident that the Italian possesses the expertise of playing in big matches.
