“Wow”- Chelsea urged to rekindle World Cup-winning partnership by signing rival midfielder

Darren Bent urges Chelsea to sign Manchester United star Paul Pogba

Speaking to talkSPORT (h/t football.london), former Premier League striker Darren Bent has urged Chelsea to sign Manchester United star Paul Pogba and partner him alongside Ngolo Kante in the Blues midfield. Pogba and Kante are the French national team’s first-choice midfield pairing and have led the nation to World Cup and Nations League glory.

Pogba is Man United’s record purchase after bringing him back from Juventus for a second coming at Old Trafford. The Frenchman had departed Manchester as a youngster to pursue regular game time abroad and developed into an international superstar in Italy. His return to Old Trafford has, however, not gone to plan.

Currently, into the last six months of his United contract, Pogba has been linked with a move away and could exit the club as a free agent in the summer. The 28-year-old has not yet indicated any preference to stay in Manchester beyond the current season.

While Pogba has been inconsistent with his performances for Man United, the midfield star looks like a completely different player alongside Kante for his national side. The pair have often played in a double pivot for Les Bleus, and it has helped bring the best out of Pogba. He, however, seems incapable of replicating the same at Old Trafford.

The dream duo to link up?

Kante’s reputation is built on being one of the world’s best defensive midfielders, which helps Pogba bomb forward and supplement his team’s attacks, where the Manchester United star is most effective. Having the Chelsea star alongside him provides Pogba with the perfect foil to move up the field.

Bent believes that if the two were to play alongside each other at Stamford Bridge, it might help the mercurial Pogba perform consistently at club level and bring out the side of him that the Premier League is yet to see.

“When Paul Pogba plays alongside Kante he looks like a completely different player, if they [Chelsea] were to sign him…wow.”

Few can argue that Pogba is a much better player when he dons his national colours rather than the red of Man United. However, with his contract running down, the player has to decide where his future lies.

The 28-year-old has already proved that he can thrive alongside Kante. With the 30-year-old unlikely to leave Stamford Bridge anytime soon, the only way the duo can rekindle their relationship at the club level is at Chelsea. Whether that is something Pogba is willing to consider remains to be seen.

Taking a step back to reality, we realise that this link-up is the stuff of dreams- great to imagine but unlikely to happen. As things stand, the Frenchman is likely to take his talents abroad. Whether this means he will return to Turin or elsewhere remains to be seen.

It is wishful thinking that Pogba would be open to moving to Chelsea. There is little to suggest that something along those lines is on the cards at this moment in time.
