Transfer News: Chelsea consider Stuttgart defender Borna Sosa as Ben Chilwell replacement
According to Fussball Transfers (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are keen on signing 24-year-old Croatian left-back Borna Sosa from VfB Stuttgart as a replacement for the injured Ben Chilwell.
Chelsea are yet to find a quality replacement for the England international, who would certainly miss the rest of the season after his recent knee injury. Marcos Alonso is there, but getting consistent performances out of him for the remainder of the season would be challenging considering his age and current form.
Chelsea recalled Kenedy from Flamengo but the Brazilian hasn’t played for Chelsea in a long time, especially in the Premier League. And so, it remains to be seen if he is the one supposed to take over Chilwell’s vacant position down the left flank.
It is believed that Chelsea are currently targeting VfB Stuttgart star Borna Sosa for the left-back role. However, the German team is not interested in selling one of their squad’s key players in the middle of the season. Even if the Blues manage to convince Die Schwaben, they may have to beat Italian giants Inter Milan for his signature.
Sosa to Chelsea?
Thomas Tuchel started the season riding on the rampaging form of two fullbacks – Ben Chilwell and Reece James. The two English stars played quite aggressively in the initial phase of the season and were a major part of our attacking cavalry going forward.
Sosa has played quite a similar role to Chilwell at Stuttgart. Due to his attacking nature, the Croatian star has often found himself in advanced areas and isn’t a shabby customer with the ball at his feet in the final third of the pitch. With two goals and four assists in 17 appearances across all competitions, he could prove to be a viable option to play down the left flank for Tuchel’s team.
Fabrizio Romano has also recently suggested that Lyon are doing everything possible to keep hold of Emerson Palmieri, creating significant barriers for our board in their attempt to recall him. But we would be able to get him once his loan term ends in the summer so it remains to be seen what plans the German manager has for Emerson and potentially Sosa in the long run.

Signing a player in January isn’t the easiest option. But it isn’t a secret that our poor form on the pitch has vaguely coincided with injuries to Chilwell and James.
With less than 10 days remaining in the transfer window, time is fast running out if Tuchel wants a top-quality option to replace Chilwell until at least the summer. Can that man be Sosa, who just turned 24 yesterday? That is a question only time can answer.
