According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano (h/t Football.London), Sevilla have decided not to sell Diego Carlos in the ongoing window, proving to land a significant boost to Chelsea in their attempt to land Jules Kounde.
Jules Kounde has shown an emphatic spell of performances in the last few seasons. The French star has been one of the best young central defenders in La Liga after 25 appearances across all competitions in this term.
The 23-year-old was on the transfer radar of Chelsea last summer. It is also believed that Blues were close to reaching an agreement for a transfer fee of £43m. However, the Spanish team’s sporting director, Monchi, increased the asking price, putting the West Londoners on the backfoot.
Sevilla’s other first-choice centre-back, Diego Carlos, attracted severe interest from Newcastle. However, Fabrizio Romano suggests Julen Lopetegui’s side refused to give in the transfer offer from the Magpies.
Losing Carlos in the winter transfer window could have been a significant disappointment for Sevilla. In such a scenario, selling Kounde in the following transfer window could have been challenging for the Spanish team and a big blow for the Blues.
Chelsea could look to rejuvenate the transfer pursuit of Kounde in the summer transfer window. In such a case, selling the French star wouldn’t cause much damage to the Spanish side’s intentions. Carlos and Kounde have been the foundation of Julen Lopetegui’s defence, and they could help the team put up a fight for the La Liga title in this campaign.
Kounde has shown the quality to become a future excellent, and he would instantly get a place in the backline of the Chelsea team, considering his recent performances.
With Sevilla’s approach, Chelsea could get a golden opportunity to secure the summer transfer. But, our board has to make a reasonable offer that can convince the French star to join our team. But, how our board approaches the transfer decision of Kounde would mostly depend on the contract renewal status of the available defenders.
