According to the Independent, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has suggested that he prefers to have his current players return to the field from injuries rather than bringing in new players.
Chelsea are already without Trevoh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell and Reece James who are all sidelined. At the same time, Andreas Christensen went into self-isolation after testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of the clash against Manchester City. However, that’s not the only issue. N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva have just returned from isolation while Mateo Kovačić also only recently returned from injury last month.
Injuries have left Tuchel with decisions to make this season. Ideally, the German would not have rushed back Kante or Lukaku into the starting XI after their initial return to fitness. However, with a lack of options to call upon, his hand was forced.
The requirement for fresh legs has been more evident in recent weeks. The failure to find such options in the team would only highlight the need for new signings. However, our German manager is not quite sold on the fact that we require new signings but emphasized that he rather needs the whole squad back available.
“Of course, we will try to improve but if you mean do we need other players, I think we just need our whole squad.”
The former Paris Saint Germain manager also showed his trust in the players of the Chelsea squad by praising their ability and ambition. Hopefully, they too will repay his faith in them by performing on the field.
“I’ve said it many times; key players are key players because they are key in everything they do and every way in which they behave. Our team is a strong team, and I love the ambition.”
Thomas Tuichel started Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic in the attacking midfield role and used Malang Sarr in the centre back pairing against Machester City. However, they haven’t been the first choice of the German manager throughout the season and it showed. They certainly didn’t have the same impact as our first choice starters, and we suffered another setback at the hand of Pep Guardiola’s team.
Our chance of winning the league title currently looks challenging. However, we are still fighting in all the other major domestic and European competitions. In the upcoming month, we have the FA Cup, the Club World Cup and also the Carabao Cup final. Clearly one can see why Tuchel is keen to have his best players back.
Tuchel’s comments would suggest that the club is not actively seeking to bring in reinforcements this month. Whether that is truly the case or he is merely setting up a smokescreen to downplay the club’s behind the scene negotiations remains to be seen.
