Chelsea confident of landing Sevilla star Jules Kounde
According to 90min (h/t Mirror), Chelsea are said to be confident of signing Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, who is the Blues’ top defensive target.
It is said that the London-based club have a genuine belief that Koude will join them at some point in 2022. The Frenchman’s addition will give the Blues a player who can turn into their lynchpin in the defence for years to come.
Although a move in January looks unlikely, Chelsea are looking to work out a way to bring the centre back to Stamford Bridge in the summer. One of the best young defenders in Europe, Kounde would be an excellent addition to Tuchel’s side.
Despite being heavily linked to Chelsea last summer, Kounde ended up staying with Sevilla after a move to London collapsed in the eleventh hour. The Blues had agreed on a price for the defender and Kounde had his heart set on the move, but the deal fell through when Sevilla increased their demands.
The 23-year-old has been earmarked by the Chelsea management to replace either Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, or Cesar Azpilicueta. All three of the players are currently in the final months of their Chelsea contracts.
Despite missing out on Kounde previously, Chelsea has seen youngsters Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr step up as defensive cover when needed. While the duo has shown promise, Kounde is a better-rounded player and has a higher ceiling.
The centre back’s stock has risen over the past few years, with impressive performances in Spain as well as in the international circuit for France. If he continues to keep up the same level of performance, there is no reason why he cannot develop into a world-class player.
