According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are willing to offer compensation to Lyon if they approve the loan recall of Emerson Palmieri this month. He had moved to France on a season-long loan deal, but he could be in line to return to Stamford Bridge should the French side give in to the demands.
Thomas Tuchel has asked the club to end the loan prematurely due to the defensive crisis that has unfolded recently. The Blues saw their initial attempt get turned down by Lyon, which has prompted them to sweeten the deal by offering reimbursement for his services.
Lucas Digne is another option for Tuchel, but it seems less likely that a transfer can be finalised on that front. There are no advanced negotiations regarding his signing as Everton are demanding a permanent transfer. It remains to be seen how the situation develops in the coming days regarding a potential arrival in the left-back position.
If the Toffees are negotiating for a permanent transfer, then it is understandable why we have decided not to go after Digne. After all, Ben Chilwell would only miss the rest of the season, meaning it would not be wise to splash money just for six months- if that is our plan for the ex-Barcelona man.
As for the Ligue 1 club, we would hope that they accept the latest offer from our side. But we always have to prepare for the worst-case scenario since they could reject our second approach for the recall. That would put us in a tight spot, considering how essential it is to bring someone in as soon as possible.
It highlights how we should have included a formal recall clause so we could have activated it on such occasions. Let’s hope that the West London club learns from their mistake and don’t repeat it again. Even if it complicates deals, such an option is always beneficial for the parent club. Since the first week of the January transfer window is already past us, we have to find a solution as soon as possible, considering how we have several crucial fixtures that are set to follow.
Marina Granovskaia has to look at other targets who could be brought in on loan for six months in case we cannot get Emerson in the next few days. Recalling the 27-year-old would have been the ideal option, but we are not in control over his future for now.
Dealings in the winter transfer window are always difficult but we have to find someone to back Marcos Alonso for the rest of the season. After all, that could possibly ruin our chances of having a great campaign, as was the case with Liverpool when they endured a centre-back crisis last season.
