“Better than them”- Chelsea skipper sends out League Cup warning after win vs Spurs

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has his sights set on lifting the Carabao Cup trophy at Wembley next month

Speaking to the club’s official website after their 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta believes his team fully deserved the victory, and now has his sights firmly set on lifting the trophy at Wembley next month.

The Blues already had one foot in the final after securing a 2-0 win against Spurs in the first leg of the tie last week at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea made sure there were no hiccups on the road to the final, thanks to an Antonio Rudiger goal.

Although the game was marred with a couple of controversial VAR incidents that went against Spurs, Azpilicueta had no doubts that Chelsea were the best team over the two games.

“Of course the game was maybe not our best, we could have scored more goals, we could have controlled the game better, but we got the job done. Through two legs we beat them 3-0 and now we have to prepare for the final. I think we were better than them.”

Although the Spaniard admitted that his side could have controlled the game better and lost a bit of control at the end, he emphasised that the most important part of the win was that the team got the job done. The main thing on Azpilicueta’s mind following the victory, though, is the chance to lift more silverware as Chelsea captain and lead the team out at Wembley.

Next trophy on the list

This is the London club’s third final in the space of a year, having progressed to the FA Cup and the Champions League finals in 2021. The Blues went on to win the UCL last year, with a Kai Havertz goal securing the trophy for the Blues against Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Ahead of next month’s final at Wembley, Azpilicueta highlighted the side’s winning mentality in every competition they play and insisted that this Blues side’s DNA is to always be looking for the next trophy.

“That’s the aim when we start every competition, we want to get as far as possible and fight for trophies. Of course we are happy to get through, to play in another final, but now we want more, we want the trophy. Once you get in the final you don’t want to just be happy to be there, you want to win it, and we will do our best.”

With another final appearance awaiting us next month, it’s an exciting time to be a Chelsea fan, with a third final to set our sights on in less than a year. Thomas Tuchel’s arrival has certainly caused an upturn in our club’s fortunes, and we can hope for more silverware to be added to our trophy cabinet.

Despite injuries and COVID wrecking our squad, the team sits second in the Premier League table behind Manchester City, and have been riding high in the Champions League and FA Cup. The Blues have certainly hit their best form this season, and would certainly love to be rewarded for their efforts with silverware.

With a final for the Carabao Cup trophy now awaiting us, we can aim to win some silverware as early as February, with the FIFA Club World Cup also coming next month. For Azpilicueta, this may well be his first EFL Cup triumph as our captain. He started at left-back in the 2014/15 League Cup final where we beat Spurs, but John Terry was our captain that day.
