Transfer News: Chelsea ready to step up pursuit for Ronald Araujo from Barcelona amidst contract issues
According to transfer news on Sport (h/t The Metro), Chelsea have ‘enormous interest’ in signing Ronald Araujo amidst his contract situation at Barcelona.
The Blues possess one of the best defences across Europe but are apparently looking to add to it. The latest player to be linked to them is Uruguayan international Araujo. The centre-back signed for the Blaugrana club two years ago.
He has since made 53 appearances for them but is now linked with a move to England. The 22-year-old is in the final two years of his contract and is currently being paid less than most of the stars at the Catalan club. Barcelona wish to tie him to a new deal but fear that a lucrative offer from a foreign club could sway his interest from staying at the Nou Camp.
Chelsea and Liverpool are interested in signing the defender, and the Blues would have to be wary of the interest from the Merseysiders.
Fits right into our plans
Chelsea might possess more than enough talent at the back currently but could face a shortage soon. Antonio Rudiger is more likely than ever to depart due to a contract standstill between him and the club, according to Goal (h/t The Express).
Andreas Christensen is also in the final year of his contract and could leave for nothing in the summer. Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta are also in similar situations. There is no guarantee on the number of defenders that might leave at the end of the season.
Thus, planning in advance for it is a great strategy. Moreover, Araujo’s physical characteristics, including his 6’2 stature, might make him a great fit for our team. In an ideal world, we would add him to our existing lot without losing any one of them to other clubs- since giving him time to adjust to a new league would be beneficial.

However, if push comes to shove, the Uruguayan could be a good option for us. South American stars have always shined for us, with Ramires, Oscar, David Luiz, Willian, and Thiago Silva being just some examples. Additionally, with only a year left on his contract next summer, the Blues might hold some leverage in negotiations.
But only time will tell whether the player rejects a new contract at Barcelona and joins the London club.
