According to Italian journalist Enzo Bucchioni (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are readying their opening move to sign Federico Chiesa.
The Italian ace has developed into one of the finest wingers on the continent today. He is increasingly establishing himself as a key player for both club and country.
He ended the last season with 15 goals and 11 assists in 46 matches. But what caught the eyes of football fans worldwide was his performance in the EURO 2020. The Fiorentina youth striker played a vital role in Italy’s triumph. Despite experiencing an injury-hit season, he continues to draw interest from across Europe.
Chelsea has been linked with Chiesa recently but hasn’t made any big move to sign the Italian forward. But it is believed that the Fiorentina loanee’s performance against Thomas Tuchel’s team in the two legs of the Champions League have convinced Marina Granovskaia’s board to register their first bid.
Italian journalist Enzo Bucchioni suggested that the North London team are preparing a £71.7m bid for the 24-year-old, and the manager, Thomas Tuchel has given his blessingst for the move.
“Chelsea have decided to take action and offer £71.7m for Federico Chiesa. Evidently, seeing him play twice closely has removed the last doubts, and Tuchel gave the OK, and the operation has officially started through intermediaries.”
Chelsea’s transfer ban obliged Frank Lampard to work with whatever he had at the youth and first-team level in his first season at the club. But as soon as the ban was uplifted, the Blues board spent a hefty sum in the market to attract top-class reinforcements.
Even though Blues strikers gave some top-notch performances at times, they haven’t lived up to the expectations this season. Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku’s goal stats are far behind other Premier League top performers.
Chiesa could help solve the riddle. The Italian is active in the penalty box and has top-notch dribbling skills to get past defenders. He can make a perfect pair with Lukakau in the front. The Belgian is known to hold off the defenders and pass it to the attacking mate. Thomas Tuchel can place Chiesa in a second striker role as the Italian will also provide width when attacking the opponent defenders.
Securing Chiesa could be a gamechanger for the Blues. Whether that happens remains to be seen.
