Spanish giants keen to land 32-year-old Chelsea star on free transfer

Transfer News: Barcelona looking to seal a move for Chelsea veteran Cesar Azpilicueta

According to transfer news on Marca, Barcelona are looking to sign Cesar Azpilicueta amidst his impending contract situation at Chelsea.

The 32-year-old has a little over six months on his contract and could leave the London club in the summer. The Blues have tabled an offer to keep him at the club but it is yet to be signed by the player.

Barcelona are looking to take advantage of this opportunity by handing him a chance to return to his home country. The Blaugrana recently re-signed Dani Alves but are aware that he cannot play week in week out. Moreover, Sergino Dest and Sergi Roberto have not instilled any confidence in new boss Xavi given their recent performances.

Thus, the Nou Camp outfit are hoping that Azpilicueta rejects the offer on the table from Chelsea, thereby enabling them to directly talk to his representatives in January over a potential move in the summer.

Azpilicueta is still important for Chelsea

The defender is going to be vastly important to the Blues in the coming years. The current lot are brilliant on the pitch, but there are few leaders amongst them. Azpilicueta is certainly one of them, and his guidance could help mould the leaders of tomorrow.

He is one of the few members of the team to have lifted the Premier League title previously. His experience in the game is appreciated by Thomas Tuchel too, as indicated by his reliance on the player when the team needs to close out matches.

The former Marseille defender also provides a lot of versatility on the pitch. In the past month itself, he has played in the right-back, left-back, and centre-back roles. This allows Tuchel to experiment with several approaches to the game without compromising on quality.

Azpilicueta is the club captain for a reason, and his contribution throughout the years has been vital. The Blues are primed to win several more titles in the coming years we shall need our veteran to perform whenever called upon. He may not be the first name on the team sheet anymore, but his value to the club is unparalleled.
