Thomas Tuchel is optimistic about the future of Cesar Azpilicueta at Chelsea
According to the Mirror, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel thinks that there’s no problem in the contract negotiation for Cesar Azpilicueta as the Spaniard has many reasons to continue at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has been phenomenal over the years. The Spaniard has had an illustrious career spread over nine years at the North London club. Despite dealing with an injury issue, the 32-year-old has already made 18 appearances across all competitions for the Blues this season.
Azpilicueta is serving the final year of his current contract at Chelsea and would be a free agent in the summer. But keeping in mind his history and legacy with the club, it seems quite obvious that he would pen down a new deal. The Blues board, however, has been lagging behind in that regard.
Amid such a situation, the veteran defender has been linked with a return to Spain in recent times. But Thomas Tuchel is calm about his captain’s future.
In his recent press conference, the German manager revealed his optimism regarding the stay of Azpilicueta at the club. He said:
“I don’t see any problem here. The situation between Azpi and the club is very, very clear — he’s our captain, he has all the possibilities to stay here as long as possible, to be the legend and to become the legend that he already is, maybe.”
Marina Granovskaia’s board has been struggling with the contract situation of crucial defenders in recent times. Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Azpilicueta all will be out of contract in the summer, and the Blues face a threat of losing them for free.
Azpilicueta and Chelsea go a long way back. It would be a tough task finding a Chelsea fan that wouldn’t want the skipper to extend his stay at the Bridge. In many ways, he serves as the link to our recent past, with our squad experiencing notable and wholesale changes over the years.
