It was a tale of two halves as Chelsea bagged the victory against a tough Aston Villa side with a 3-1 margin.
Thomas Tuchel finally had some players back ready and raring to go. The draw against Everton and Wolves derailed the title challenge slightly but the big guns were back and firing against Villa.
The Blues started the game brightly as Mason Mount and Reece James were combining effectively on the right-hand side. But the home side soon took control and create a few opportunities, but to no avail. Then just before the half-hour mark Matt Targett found himself in a crossing position.
However, his cross that was lushed with pace was deflected by the glancing head of Reece James, and the flight of the ball defeated Edouard Mendy. There was little anybody could do about that, but the men in blue would make sure to retaliate soon.
Just 5 minutes after Villa celebrated their opener, Callum Hudson-Odoi was caught by Matty Cash in the penalty box. The referee awarded a penalty, and Jorginho did what he does best from the spot to put us level on the night. The first half ended after both teams failed to open up each other’s backline.
Tuchel, however, made a change at half-time by bringing Romelu Lukaku to the fold. The Belgian was out for a while but looked fresh as he came on. Instantaneously, the West London club notched up a gear and started interchanging passes and positions to keep the ball from the hosts.
Soon, Lukaku notched his first league goal since scoring against Villa in September. The 28-year-old shrugged off Tyrone Mings to head home a wonderful cross by Hudson-Odoi. The home side then grew into the game and tried to pile the pressure on Chelsea but it was our side that were still creating the chances, with Mount and Hudson Odoi both missing open chances to score. However, there was some worry after Thiago Silva limped off the pitch mid-way through the second half.
The Stamford Bridge outfit gained a hold of the ball in the final minutes and tried to put the game to bed. Eventually, a counter-attack in added time led by the bustling Lukaku led to Ezri Konsa conceding another penalty by bringing the centre forward. Jorginho found the net again to secure the victory and go on level on points with Liverpool, who had their game against Leeds United postponed.
