Mason Mount has delved deep into the new role that he is playing at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel while mentioning how the manager has helped him to improve. He had enjoyed a great spell recently when the team needed him to step up to cover for the lack of attackers in front.
The 22-year-old struggled to get into the goal involvement tally early on in the season but he has shown a rapid improvement over the past few weeks. He scored four goals alongside two assists in December to assist the team when the striking duo of Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku was out on the sidelines.
Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website, Mount revealed how Tuchel played a role in improving his gameplay on the attacking side of things. He also explained how he had changed his style compared to the early days where he did not have much involvement higher up the pitch.
“He has definitely improved my attacking play. I had never really played as high up as I have under him before in my career. It is about getting into the box more, being more clinical, the final pass. It is about really putting that pressure on myself to be someone who creates.”
“My first year or two I played in a bit of a deeper role as an eight. Now I am playing higher up as a 10-slash-winger, so that gives me more opportunities to make it into the box. I have seen that improvement in the last few games in terms of the chances I am getting now just from trying to get into the box.”
Watching the Cobham academy graduate grow and develop into the player he is now has been a refreshing sight for the Blues fans and this next step in his progression would take him to newer heights. What makes him successful is how he still has an impact deeper in midfield as well when needed, which is a nod to his great potential.
It also tells us how the German manager trusts the Englishman and considers him in high regard, which is evident from the task the latter has been assigned. That has also seen the midfielder develop some great combinations with his fellow teammates, especially Reece James, who has also been sensational this term.
We would need the Blues youngster to have similar displays in the coming months as we will face arguably the toughest challenge of the season. We have a tough run of fixtures coming up in succession in January and February when we will face teams like Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur etc.
The team had a recent slump which has seen us drop down the table in the Premier League title race, but the season is still long. We could climb the way back to the top, and the England international would play a key role in putting pressure on the league leaders.
