Transfer News: Liverpool are eyeing Chelsea ace Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer next summer
According to transfer news on El Nacional (h/t football.london), Liverpool are preparing an offer to lure Antonio Rudiger to Merseyside amidst his contract standstill with Chelsea.
The 28-year-old centre-back has arguably been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since the start of 2021. His performances under fellow countryman Thomas Tuchel have made him a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge in the past year.
However, he is out of contract in the summer and it appears as though the German international is going to leave the club at the end of the season. He is yet to make a decision over his destination but Liverpool have now joined the race to sign him.
The Reds only brought in Ibrahima Konate over the summer and could be looking to further strengthen their backline. Moreover, the prospect of signing a top defender from a title rival, for free could be tempting for Jurgen Klopp and co.
Low blow
The 28-year-old leaving the London club would be a setback in itself. He was partially responsible for securing the Champions League trophy in May and has been key in our title race this season. Thus, his departure is going to create a huge hole in our backline.
However, it would be a low blow if one of our title rivals swoops in and signs him. Liverpool are a direct rival to us this season and are likely to be one next season as well since both teams are not showing any signs of slowing down in their quest to win the big titles.
If Rudiger joins the Reds and proves key in preventing us from winning a major title, we would be left with an egg on our face. It is unlikely that the former AS Roma star will betray us, but money can often influence one’s opinion.

Unfortunately, Chelsea can do very little about this situation since the defender will make the all-important decision at the end of the season. Rudiger could join any club, but the Blues would be hoping he secures a move away from the country if he does decide to reject a contract extension at the West London club.
