Speaking in his post-match press conference, as quoted by football.london, Thomas Tuchel revealed his worry over injury concerns to Chelsea duo Trevoh Chalobah and Hakim Ziyech following the draw against Wolves.
The Blues failed to win for the fourth time in the last six games on Sunday afternoon after they proved incapable of overcoming a stout Wolves defence. Tuchel & co never wanted to engage in the game, as their Covid-19 cases went up to seven in the leadup to the match. However, the club’s appeals to postpone the game fell on deaf ears.
French superstar N’Golo Kante did feature the entire 90 minutes, while Mateo Kovacic also came on for a late cameo. But as two of our midfielders returned from injury, Chalobah and Ziyech had to be taken off after suffering minor knocks.
Tuchel revealed his concern regarding both players after the game. It is fair to say that the German was not happy with how things were going.
“We can survive a game, but we will pay the price for sure. Maybe we already do it with all our midfielders. Trevoh, hopefully, it is just pain, but at the moment, it’s very painful. We hope it is not serious, but we need further examination. With Hakim, I do not think it is bad. He got hit on his nerve, and his calf was tight. We had to take him off, of course.”
It is important to understand that Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jorginho failed to make the squad on Sunday. One is yet to ascertain whether they tested positive, but Tuchel did reveal that both were nursing their respective knocks going into the weekend fixture.
Add Chalobah and Ziyech to this list, and our frontline and the defensive unit will also suffer. The gaffer had to name the same front three due to the positive tests of Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, and Callum Hudson-Odoi, while Kai Havertz was also unavailable for selection.
Thus, if Ziyech suffers a major injury, it leaves us with Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount as our strike options. The defence still has a substantial cover, but Chalobah has been deputising in midfield this month. And his presence in that area, especially without Loftus-Cheek and Jorginho, has been noteworthy.
If things remain the same, it would be a surprise if our Wednesday night Carabao Cup tie is given the green signal. Our current team is already exhausted. And more than half the players that form a starting XI are unavailable for one or the other reason. The draw against Wolves was not the worst result, but given that we were already chasing Man City, it will take some doing to undo things from hereon in.
