“Look away”- Chelsea boss expresses disappointment over Everton draw

Thomas Tuchel expresses disappointment with Chelsea players over lack of killer instinct in Everton draw

Speaking in his post-match press conference, as quoted by football.london, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel explained his disappointment with his side over the lack of a killer instinct in the draw against Everton.

The Toffees held the Blues to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night. Tuchel had to start the game without a recognised centre-forward, but that was no reason to draw against an already depleted Everton side.

Rafa Benitez did not expect a lot from his team, given the number of teenagers he was playing and bringing on from the bench. However, all the Blues could conjure was a Mason Mount goal before conceding four minutes later. Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech were wasteful on the night and showed no real urgency to change the complexion of the game.

Tuchel expressed his disappointment with the lack of a killer instinct of his side on the night. Despite having numerous chances, they were unable to make it count.

“We could have been in the lead at halftime. Easy. We were not and we have to be careful now – and my myself – that we point the finger and say it happens again. We have a huge chance to talk about a 3-0 and talk about how well we did without many players.

“If we look back, it seems to have too often. We need to consider that sometimes when looking back, we do mistakes, and analysing patterns are maybe not there. We will not look away. The dressing room is very disappointed, and I am very disappointed.”

Pattern of play

It is the sixth consecutive time that Chelsea conceded a goal across all competitions. The Blues looked very solid and rigid for the first four months of the campaign but have capitulated into a pool of mistakes since defeating Juventus 4-0.

We have scored first in the last five games, and we have let the opponent come back into the game. Thus, the players are missing the ruthless nature of killing off games. The men in blue were high-flying a month ago and would smash in two or three goals without reply.

But the general play in the final third has been woeful. Ross Barkley, Marcos Alonso, and Saul Niguez are not good enough and need to be moved on before it is too late. Tuchel is not one to dwell on the mistakes, but he shall make the players suffer the consequences and hope to rectify them in training.

In all honesty, playing without at least one No 9 was always going to hurt us. But there was no reason to concede a goal and that is down to everybody since it was from a set-piece. Regardless, the team shall have to focus on their trip to the Molineux on the weekend and try to get back to winning ways.
