Speaking after the game, as quoted by The Metro, Antonio Rudiger claimed that Chelsea cannot be happy after dropping points against Wolves on Sunday.
The Blues went ahead with the weekend fixture despite having seven positive Covid-19 cases. Regardless, Tuchel was able to field a strong starting XI, at least one that could compete for a victory.
But the West London club created few chances to score from. Mason Mount was on the end of a half-chance, as was N’Golo Kante. The only clear-cut opportunity fell to Christian Pulisic 10 minutes from time but the American could not get it past a determined Jose Sa.
The defence, however, did their job well by restricting the Wolves attack to little to no chances. Antonio Rudiger, who was a part of the backline, claimed after the game that the Blues cannot be happy after dropping points against the Molineux outfit after accepting that they came into the match under ‘not the easiest circumstances.’
‘Luck is not on our side because we do not bury this type of chance [Pulisic chance], so yea, it is difficult not to win games away from home. The first half was not our best, they dominated the game, but they were not dangerous.
While he believes that the Blues did well after the break, it mattered for little as they weren’t able to secure all three points. There is little to be happy out given that we have ceded ground in the title race.
‘The second half we had a good uplift, we showed character but still at the end of the day we cannot be happy with this point because looking at the table.’
The situation was tough, but Rudiger has a point. We had more than the necessary players to secure a victory against a side that had only won once in their last four games. Although it is important to understand that they gave Man City and Liverpool a run for their money.
But tight games like the one on the weekend are decided by one chance on goal. Pulisic had it but could not be decisive enough to put us in the lead. In fact, this draw hurts even more after Liverpool dropped points against Tottenham Hotspur later in the day.
To add more salt into the wounds, Manchester City won their game convincingly against relegation-threatened Newcastle United. However, we were fielding nearly the same team, barring the midfield, that featured against Everton just a couple of days ago.
Thus, we had a lot going against us, but one might look back and wonder if we could have gained some ground in the title chase by winning this game. Regardless, the focus shall now be on facing Brentford in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night before travelling to Villa Park on Boxing Day.
