According to the club’s official Twitter account, John Terry has made his return to Chelsea as a coaching consultant for the Cobham academy setup. He had a recent spell at Aston Villa as an assistant coach, where he gained valuable experience in this field.
The former England international will be contributing to the youth development programme where he would engage in coaching discussions with colleagues, mentor academy players and support parent dialogue. He is set to take the role next month on a part-time basis.
The flexibility would suit the needs of the 41-year-old as well as the club to pursue their respective commitments. The part-time role would allow the former centre-back to keep developing his coaching career while simultaneously assisting the West London club and the youth players.
Terry rose through the youth set-up after joining the Blues at the age of 14 and has gone on to become one of the highly-regarded club legends at Stamford Bridge. He would have a great deal of knowledge about what it takes to become a successful academy graduate and would look to implement that at Cobham.
Our youth system has flourished over the past few years and has seen many of the academy graduates play a crucial part in the first team. Players like Reece James and Mason Mount are integral to the current side whereas, others like Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been important as well.
Loanees like Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour could play a role in the future where they would flourish in a suitable environment. Arguably, we have been at our best in recent years, and the youth system has played a major part in it. As such, we must focus on developing it even further and, the personality, knowledge and experience that Terry brings would greatly assist in that regard.
And who knows, these could be the baby steps he needs to assume a more prominent role at the club in the future. If Frank Lampard could manage our senior team, why not Terry?
