Transfer News: Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is closing in on Barcelona transfer
According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t Mirror), Andreas Christensen is not convinced about renewing his contract at Chelsea and is close to reaching an agreement with Catalan giants, Barcelona.
The Dane has done well at Stamford Bridge and has stepped up when needed under Thomas Tuchel. The defender has developed into a critical player for Thomas Tuchel and has been top-notch throughout the campaign. The 25-year-old has made 19 appearances across all competitions this season.
Christensen’s Chelsea contract is set to expire in the summer of 2022. However, Marina Granovskaia’s board is finding it difficult to tie him down to a new contract as recent talks between both parties has reached a stalemate. Now, it is believed that the former Borussia Mönchengladbach player has ‘no intentions’ to renew his stay at Stamford Bridge.
The 25-year-old’s Chelsea future is a huge question mark and he might end up plying his trade at Barcelona instead. It is believed that the Danish defender has been negotiating with Joan Laporta’s board for ‘weeks’ and is closing in on an agreement involving a move to the Camp Nou.
Chelsea are currently in hot waters with the contract extension of their top defenders. Apart from Christensen, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, and César Azpilicueta will all be out of contracts at the end of the season.
Antonio Rudiger also looks set to move to the Spanish top flight and is believed to be close to joining Real Madrid. Replacing all these key players will not be an easy task come next summer.
Christensen has been a pillar of the Blues’ recent success. In the Champions League final, he played a massive role amid the early injury complications to Thiago Silva. Just who Chelsea have earmarked to replace Christensen should the need arise remains to be seen.

If both defenders’ intentions become true and they end up in the La Liga for the following season, that would be a massive blow for Chelsea. Therefore, shortlisting defensive targets for the coming transfer window should become the priority for the Blues board.
