Transfer News: Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta closing on Barcelona switch
According to El Nacional (h/t Metro), FC Barcelona are in ‘advanced talks’ to secure the signature of Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta.
The Spaniard has established himself as a Chelsea great in his illustrious nine-year career at Stamford Bridge. He has proven to be a reliable and consistent performer throughout the years., securing 14 goals and 56 appearances in 444 official games for the west Londoners.
Furthermore, the 32-year-old player captained Thomas Tuchel’s side in the Champions League triumph last season. A reliable player, he adds quality and leadership to a young Blues side.
However, his time at Stamford Bridge could be closing to a close. The Spanish international’s current contract ends the following summer, and he is yet to sign a new deal with Chelsea.
Barcelona are looking to take advantage of the situation and have entered advanced talks with the veteran to fulfil Xavi’s request in luring the defender to the Camp Nou. The deal seems closer than ever as Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is preparing for a grand farewell to acknowledge the player’s incredible contribution to the London club.
Azpilicueta and Chelsea’s bond is quite old and strong. They have been through rough patches in the past and have also tasted glory together. Thus, the news of an impending parting comes as a surprise. However, the Spaniard could be eyeing to end his magnificent career back in his home country.
The rise of Reece James in the right-back position has also seen Azpilicueta miss a few games recently. Whether the time has come to pass the baton remains to be seen.

Even though Azpilicueta is past his peak years at 32, he has made a massive impact under Thomas Tuchel. His age could make him look like an unpromising asset for the future. However, his expertise could come in handy for any top team. The Blues board should put much thought before allowing him to join a European rival.
