Thomas Tuchel explains the reliance on Chelsea ace Thiago Silva amidst several injury concerns
Speaking in an interview, as quoted by the club’s official website, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel revealed how Thiago Silva is happy to play several games amidst several injury concerns.
The Blues have suffered quite the hit through injuries and Covid-19 in the past couple of weeks. Every area on the pitch has suffered, but the midfield and frontline are wounded currently. However, one man that has played a lot of games despite his ageing body is Thiago Silva.
The Brazilian continues to function like a Rolls Royce in the centre of the back three. His calm nature with and without the ball has earned us crucial points this season.
Tuchel recently revealed that the former PSG ace is happy to play week-in and week-out. He also pointed out that the defender can be afforded a break since the major concerns are in midfield and upfront.
‘He (Thiago) is happy to do so. He plays in a protected role in the middle of a back three. So he is not exposed to the maximum intensity of the match. That suits him, and he is a good fit. So still, of course, the problem starts with injuries and covid in the same positions.
‘We have even the personnel to rotate if we think Thiago needs a break. The concern is in central midfield and upfront.’
Top leader
The Blues signed nearly six to seven players last season but the pick of the bunch was Silva. The 37-year-old signed on a free transfer and was immediately slotted into the first team by Frank Lampard as he formed a fearless partnership with Kurt Zouma.
Thomas Tuchel, too, preferred his former disciple in the back three formation. The centre-back led us to the UEFA Champions League title in May, albeit he went off injured in the final. But his constant support from the touchline showed the kind of leader he is on and off the pitch.
He has also added a goal-scoring touch this season, especially against the big teams. He broke the deadlock against both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. The Brazilian international was also vital in the 4-0 victory against Juventus, epitomized by his high-flying goal-line clearance.

In doing so, he has played quite a lot of games this season. However, he does not look like slowing down anytime soon, courtesy of which there is no reason to drop him. The veteran is out of contract in the summer but given his desire to play, the Blues need to tie him down to a new deal as soon as possible. For now, we shall be hoping he guides us to a victory against Wolves on Sunday.
