According to Gianluca di Marzio (h/t The Metro), Chelsea duo Andreas Christensen and Thiago Silva are set to renew their respective deals amidst contract uncertainty.
The quartet of Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, and Andreas Christensen would be out of contract in the summer. However, the latter duo is set to sign an extension soon.
But getting Christensen to pen a new deal has been viewed as the priority. The defender is only 25 and has garnered interest from Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan. The Blues are apparently only one step away from agreeing to a new four-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months.
The West London club is also set to tie down Silva to a new contract soon, according to Fabrizio Romano. It is apparently only a ‘matter of time’ before he commits his future to the club, with Thomas Tuchel and the board ‘super’ happy with him.
These are two players essential to our system and the way we function. Thus, there is no doubt that the Blues have hit the bulls-eye by trying to nail them down initially. The club has apparently already made peace with the fact that Rudiger shall leave in the summer.
Moreover, there is also fear among members of Chelsea’s staff that Azpilicueta might depart at the end of the season. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are interested in him as they are offering him the opportunity to return to his home country.
Silva might turn 38 next year, but his performances have been nothing short of brilliant in the last 18 months. Christensen is also a future leader in the backline, given his age and potential. Both players could agree to pre-contracts with foreign clubs in January if they don’t pen new deals at the Bridge.
The Stamford Bridge outfit is set to compete for the biggest trophies under Tuchel, and there is a terrific squad to work with. Thus, it is crucial to get this duo to put pen to paper on a new deal soon, especially with the January transfer window around the corner.
Losing Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi in the summer is now seeming like a poor decision. The two fine young English defenders could have solved a number of defensive headaches but what has been done can’t be changed. The least we can do is avoid another exodus of defenders next summer and tie-down our best players for as long as we think it’s feasible.
