“We’re in a deep hole”- Chelsea star asks teammates to ‘stick together’ amid massive slump

Ben Chilwell admits Chelsea are in a “deep hole” and asks the team to “stick together”

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell has admitted that the team is in a “deep hole” at the moment and they need to “stick together” to come out of it.

As if the Blues hadn’t gone lower, the 3-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal on Tuesday sent them to even lower trenches than before. Talks of a relegation battle seemed like a joke a couple of weeks but it is a mathematical possibility now, albeit a very slim one.

Frank Lampard’s interim reign is yet to have a win or a draw in six games, which is astonishing, to say the least. The team has won just three games out of 16 league encounters since the turn of this year.

Here’s what Chilwell said after the game (h/t Evening Standard):

“We’re in a deep hole at the moment. To get ourselves out of it we need to stick together. There will be a lot of outside noise, but we need to stick together, train hard and, coming into games, show the effort the fans want to see.

“It’s pretty big going into next season. If we can get some results, show we’re a team and give the fans something to smile about, hopefully we can take that into pre-season.”

Taking the Englishman’s point of finishing the season well, Chelsea’s last five games are no easier. They are away to in-form Bournemouth on Saturday, followed by a home game against relegation-fighting Nottingham Forest. The final three games are just a nightmare, with away trips to Manchester United and City, the last game being at home to flying Newcastle United.

So, apart from maybe a home game against Forest, we cannot see the Blues winning any other game. The fans must be thankful that the team amassed 39 points by hook or crook before starting this freefall in the last few weeks.

Cesar Azpilicueta talked about having to sort the off-field issues for the on-field stuff to get better. The Spaniard is 100% right. After the defeat to Real Madrid, Thiago Silva admitted that the bloated squad has led to confusion among the playing staff.

More Chelsea News:

Signing 15 players in the last two transfer windows made no sense. What it did is increase the count of players in the squad without any plan of what to do with them. Once the summer commences, the first job should be to remove the deadwood and start from scratch. The new manager will need the time and patience of the people above to sort the mess out.
