According to Chelsea.com, young defender Trevoh Chalobah has committed his long-term future to Chelsea after signing a new four-and-a-half-year contract.

The 22-year-old has made a breakthrough in the first-team under coach Thomas Tuchel and has become a regular after coming back from a loan spell at FC Lorient last season.

Chalobah, who has been at the club since the age of eight, scored a goal against Crystal Palace on his debut appearance at Stamford Bridge and has only gotten more comfortable in Chelsea starting XI since then.

Since then he has featured against Aston Villa, Southampton, Brentford and Norwich City. He also played in the UEFA Super Cup and also made his Champions League debut against Juventus in Turin.

Chalobah has represented England at multiple youth levels and since 2019 has earned three Under 21 caps. After signing a new long-term contract Chalobah told Chelsea.com:

“It’s quite surreal. It’s a dream for me to sign a new long-term contract for my boyhood club and hopefully the dream continues. It’s been an unbelievable start to the season and something I never expected but it just shows that the hard work I’ve put in and going out on loans has paid off.”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia was also delighted to seal the deal for the youngster at the club. Granovskaia talking to Chelsea.com said:

“To see Trevoh joining so many of his fellow Academy graduates in the men’s first team is something we are exceptionally proud of as a Club. His performances in the early months of the season as well as his attitude and professionalism have impressed us all.”

Prior to making his breakthrough with The Blues, Chalobah was out on loan for three years, in the Championship with Ipswich Town and Huddersfield Town, and in Ligue 1 last season with Lorient- and it seems that those stints have paid off with his showings for Chelsea this season.

Chalobah’s new contract extension has come at that point where Chelsea’s backline is facing an uncertain future. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Thiago Silva all have contracts that are set to expire at the end of the season and it remains unclear as to whether all three will stay at the club next season.
