Talking in an interview after the match (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was full of praise for academy graduate Ruben Loftus-Cheek after his impressive display in their 1-0 Champions League win over Malmo on Tuesday night.
This was Loftus-Cheek’s second Champions League start for the west Londoners after making his debut six years ago. The 25-year-old was given the nod to start in a deep role in the midfield as Chelsea aimed to down the Swedes in their own backyard.
The midfielder took his time in the middle to make a mark in the game but once he got his foot in, he made a couple of brilliant chances for his fellow teammates and also impressed with sleek passing and some excellent touches throughout the match.
Tuchel, praising the midfielder’s performance after the match, said (h/t Daily Mail):
“I was a bit worried in the first 15 minutes if Ruben could find another gear but I heard before that it was his first Champions League match since 2015 from the start.”
“I think we can give the boys credit sometimes for being nervous and finding their way into the match. I am happy he fought his way through.”
Chelsea were far from their best against Malmo but a 10th clean sheet this season ensured and Ziyech’s goal was enough for Chelsea to make it seven games without defeat.
Having thumped Malmo 4-0 a fortnight ago Chelsea might have expected it to be an easy ride but it was a close encounter. But in the end, a win means Thomas Tuchel’s side have nine points from their opening four matches in Group H and are almost there to the knockout rounds of the competition.
Juventus are currently on top of the table, having won all of their four matches in the competition so far, but the Blues would be gunning to qualify as group winners by matchday 6.
