Speaking to Chelsea’s 5th Stand App (h/t Football.London), Thomas Tuchel has revealed that he plans to give the remaining Chelsea players and his coaching staff a week’s rest during the international break. The Blues are set to run into a crammed fixture list following the November Qualifiers.
The Champions League winners have had a busy run of matches so far which, was further toughened through players going through injury concerns. Tuchel is blessed with a squad full of depth and has been able to take advantage of it.
However, with the season entering its crucial stages, games are bound to come one after the other in close succession. Not to mention how competing on multiple fronts would further increase the number of matches played.
With games coming thick and fast, rest and recovery appear to be the mantra at Stamford Bridge at this moment in time. Given our injury setbacks of late, it is a wise call.
“Looking at the fixtures in December and January, it is a lot. [Club] The World Cup is coming and other international breaks so we decided here for the staff to give one week off, completely, to give everybody the chance to recover mentally and recharge the batteries.”
The German’s concerns are warranted as his players were involved in non-stop matches which, dates back to the previous season. Covid-19 has greatly impacted the fixture list which, was further affected by the continental competitions.
“December will be tough, January will be tough and it will continue like this. No more breaks and we want to push the team to the limit so that is why we use the time now, after the game [Burnley] to rest.”
The November break will also help to work on the recovery of the injured players and get them match-fit as quickly as possible. But, the spine of the team would not be enjoying any such benefit since they will be off to their respective countries.
The Blues coach would need to utilise his squad to the full potential to ensure that fatigue won’t catch up with those who won’t enjoy the week’s rest.
