“A shame”: Ex-Blues star reveals Eden Hazard’s ‘dream’ amid recent Chelsea links

Thibaut Courtois reveals Eden Hazard wants to be successful at Real Madrid amidst transfer interest from Chelsea

Speaking to Reuters, Thibaut Courtois revealed that Eden Hazard wants to be a success at Real Madrid amidst transfer interest from Chelsea.

The 30-year-old has had a pretty start-and-stop career so far at Real Madrid. Injury problems have made it impossible for him to rack up consistent game-time, and that is not something Madrid bought into when they made him their club-record signing in 2019.

According to Football.london, Chelsea, along with Newcastle United, have shown interest in signing the winger but Courtois’ comments put question marks over that story. The shot-stopper was incredible in goal for Chelsea between 2014-2018 before he signed for Los Blancos.

His Belgian teammate followed him there a year later, and Courtois has claimed that Hazard’s dream was to play for the 13-time European champions. He told Reuters:

“I have known Eden for a long time and know that his dream was to play for Real Madrid. It is a shame it has not worked out yet as everyone would like it to.

“I can see that he has got the desire, joy, and he wants to help the team. He is looking to improve… He has shown in his entire career he is one of the best players in the world.”

These comments make it seem like the Belgian winger will be busting a gut to prove his worth to Carlo Ancelotti. And so, a return to Chelsea may just remain as an unfulfilled dream for some fans.

Did we really want him back?

For all of his world-class qualities, Hazard’s injury concerns are more than just a red light for any of his potential suitors. Moreover, we cannot give in to the temptation of having one of our legends back at the club. This is not like Didier Drogba’s return in 2014 because given Hazard’s status in world football right now, he may warrant regular gametime rather than settling for a farewell in a year or two.

Frank Lampard built an incredible squad brimming with young talent, and Thomas Tuchel is now reaping its rewards. Additionally, the strong depth in our attack is already creating problems for players like Callum Hudson-Odoi who struggle for playing time.

Hence, a return would have been nice, but it is probably better for us that the 30-year-old stays put in Spain. A player like Hazard would also be an added name on the club’s wage list and it’s not like Tuchel’s Chelsea severely lack anything up front that they would need to go out and urgently get the former Lille winger.
