According to BBC Sport, the new coach of Norwich City, Dean Smith has revealed that Chelsea loanee Billy Gilmour has a vital role to fulfil in his plans. Smith was appointed as the new man at the helm after Daniel Farke was sacked following a series of poor results.
The 20-year-old was sent out on loan by the Blues on a season-long deal to gain some valuable minutes. He was getting minutes at the start of the campaign but was frozen out of the squad after he fell out of favour with Farke.
Meanwhile, he continued to excel for Scotland, which was a sharp contrast to his time at Norwich. The Blues were concerned with how the situation developed since the purpose of the loan was for him to get regular minutes. However, he has not played a single minute since September for the Canaries.
With Farke no more in the picture, Smith is ready to give his players a fresh start. Gilmour has little to worry about if he performs the same way he does in a Scotland jersey.
“They have got a big role to play at this football club, along with the rest of the squad. It’s a new start for them with a new coaching team coming in.”
When asked about the future of the loanee, Smith replied that the midfielder is vital and is a part of his plans. He added that and it is down to the players to decide what role they play in the team.
“We’ll see them in training tomorrow and it’s down to them to impress us in our time here.”
The new man in charge was also talking about Todd Cantwell alongside Gilmour. His words would be a relief to Chelsea, who will hope that things would take a turn for the better from here on out. The supporters would also be delighted to know the current situation surrounding the academy graduate.
